Southern University is mourning the tragic death of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old junior, who collapsed during an off-campus fraternity event on February 27, 2025. Wilson was a mechanical engineering student and a proud member of the university’s renowned ‘Human Jukebox’ Marching Band.

University Mourns Loss of Southern University Caleb Wilson

According to authorities, Wilson was participating in an initiation event with members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity at North Sherwood Forest Community Park when he suddenly collapsed. Witnesses at the scene called emergency services, and Wilson was rushed to Baton Rouge General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

In response to the incident, Southern University has suspended all fraternity, sorority, and student organization activities while an investigation is underway. The university has also pledged full cooperation with law enforcement to determine the cause of Wilson’s death.

Chancellor John K. Pierre issued a statement offering condolences to Wilson’s family, friends, and the student body. “Caleb Wilson was a bright light in our community. His passing is an unimaginable loss,” Pierre said. “We will ensure that every possible measure is taken to understand what led to this tragedy.”

The university is providing counseling services to students and staff struggling with the loss. “Grief can be overwhelming, and we want to make sure our students know they are not alone,” said Dr. Lisa Howard, director of student counseling services.

Investigation Underway

The Baton Rouge Police Department is leading the investigation into Wilson’s death, with hazing as a potential factor. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether hazing directly contributed, but they are gathering witness statements and reviewing video evidence from the event.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The results will play a crucial role in shaping the next steps of the investigation.

Wilson’s father, an employee of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, expressed his grief, calling his son “an incredible young man with a bright future.”

As the investigation continues, the Southern University community remains heartbroken, remembering Wilson for his achievements and the joy he brought to those around him.
