A petition on Change.org wanting Bad Bunny to be replaced as the Super Bowl halftime show has nearly 80,000 signatures.
The petition’s organizer, “Kar Shell,” believes that the Super Bowl needs to go back to it’s American roots using country artist George Strait as a preferred alternative.
“In recent years, this performance has leaned increasingly towards modern pop and international artists. While this approach certainly broadens the audience, it’s pivotal to remember the roots that have made American music what it is today.”
“George Strait, known as the ‘King of Country,’ embodies the heart and soul of American music. With over 60 No. 1 hits and more than 40 years in the music industry, George Strait is not only a legend in the country music genre but a staple in American musical history. His ability to transcend generations with his timeless songs resonates with a diverse demographic, welcoming both long-time fans and newcomers.”
Petitioners Explain Why They Signed
The petition, to date, has 78k names. Along with signing their names, petitioners have added comments with reasoning on why Strait it a better pick. One supporter wrote, “I believe the Super Bowl halftime show should celebrate true talent, class, and American roots — not manufactured hype or vulgar trends. George Strait embodies timeless artistry, respect, and authenticity.”
Another supporter added that he feels the NFL is losing their core fanbase, “I have family members who are still upset how the NFL handled the national anthem, the bad bunny halftime show has added insult to injury. The NFL is loosing what used to be the core group of fans, including me!”
While it’s unclear if Marjorie Taylor Greene signed the form, the Georgia congresswoman took to X to vocalize her disapproval of the Puerto Rican artist.
She wrote, “Bad Bunny says America has 4 months to learn Spanish before his perverse unwanted performance at the Super Bowl halftime. It would be a good time to pass my bill to make English the official language of America. And the NFL needs to stop having demonic sexual performances.”
NFL Standing Firm On Their Decision
Despite the backlash, the NFL made it clear that they will not drop Bad Bunny as its Super Bowl half-time headline performer, per commissioner Roger Goodell.
“We’re confident it’s going to be a great show,” Goodell said. “He [Bad Bunny] understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.”
The San Francisco 49ers are hosting the Super Bowl on 8 February at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
