Prince’s ‘Sign O’ The Times’ Film To be Screened In IMAX For A Limited Run

Prince’s film ‘Sign O’ the Times’ is coming to IMAX theaters.

According to Billboard, IMAX, Mercury Studios, and FilmRise announced on Monday morning (July 22) that begining on Aug. 29, Prince’s movie of the album of the same name as his classic album, will be released in IMAX theaters globally for one week only.

Per the press release, the film combines live footage and scripted scenes that were remastered for the one-week IMAX run. “Enhanced with IMAX’s precision surround sound audio, customized theatre geometry, and crystal-clear images, Prince’s virtuoso performance is set to mesmerize fans old and new in the most epic format available,” the press release stated.

The film features live performances recorded in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Antwerp, Belgium, but the footage was reshot at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

Released in 1987 as Prince’s first solo album following his disbanding of the Revolution,  Sign O’ the Times is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. The double LP captures Prince at the peak of his powers and features tracks like the riveting title track “Sign O’ The Times,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend, “Housequaker,” “U Got The Look,” and the quiet storm classic “Adore.” 

Garnering critical praise, Sign O’ the Times was nominated for Album of the Year at the 30th Grammy Awards and was voted as the best album of 1987 in The Village Voice‘s Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.

With unparalleled musicianship and showmanship, the album is a reminder of Prince’s influence on popular culture and musical legacy.

Following Prince’s passing in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 20.
